Halo Wars Strategies/Ideas

Most of this is obvious for us, but I just want to make sure for my own sake.

Build Order:
Obviously this is one of the most important aspects of the game especially at the beginning, and for any rushes. I normally do supply pad -> reactor -> barracks (for ODST strat). But I noticed some people build a reactor first. I don't think it really makes a difference but I am not 100% sure.

Troop Movements:
One thing I have trouble with is selecting groups of enemies. I often select all units and attack, but what happens is often my ODSTs get stuck in the back and can't be effective. It's a good idea to use smaller groups and set them up in an arc around what ever you are attacking.

Elephant Idea:
I haven't done this, but even though I can drop ODSTs I still find I have tens of troops trekking across the map. I am thinking if I set up an Elephant just outside their view and keep bringing in a flood of troops. What do you think? Is it worth it?

Explore:
I think the best feeling in the game is when you send out warthogs right away to explore for crates and to see what your opponent is building, and the other guy just has his hog sitting outside. It gives you a pretty damn good idea that they are going to suck. And when you can take their crates it gives you a big leg up.

Halo Wars: Strategy?

So, puyo and SB and I played last night from about midnight to 6am. We won 11 and lost 2. Anyone else get the game?

I don't know if we should all do warthog rushes. I think 2 people should, and then 1 builds ground units or hornets. Thoughts?

Breaking Down Fugg First's Stats

Even though no one knows his name, (FuggFirst, FuggFrist, MCHolla etc.) and he never posts and presumably never reads the blog. He is still apart of the Clan... a clan that is falling apart, but a clan no less. If you don't know FF is currently playing the game of American Basketball at a small Division III liberal arts school somewhere in the midwest. I think everyone (except for Adeclipse) has an idea of what that is like.

Well anyway, let's have a look at FF's numbers this season.

General:
20 Games
18 Games Started
Averaging 20.7 min per game.

Shooting:
31 FG/67 FGA
46.3 FG% (Highest of the team that has played more than 20 min total)
FF is the third lowest player for shot attempts, and since FF is the best shooter on the team, this is discouraging.

4.2 PPG. Like I said KofC thinks you should shoot more. While getting a lot of assists is good (see "Misc." below, let's be a little more selfish. Okay?)

Behind the Arc:
7 3FG/23 3FGA
30.5 3FG%
Surprisingly, FF is the second worst 3 point shooter on the team (besides the 0 for 1 big men) yet 30% is very respectable.

Free Throws:
15 FT/27 FTA
55.6% Free throw shooter.
Wow, come on FF that has to be better if you want to make the draft. While still considerably better than my 11% free throw percentage in 7th grade, I think someone needs to hit the gym.

Misc.
2.1 Rebs a game. Pretty solid.
55 Assists... wow. FF more than doubles the teams average assists per person (excluding bench scrubs)
29 Turn overs
19 Steals.
1 Block Shot. (Would like to have seen that)

Okay, so you need to shoot more, work on your free throws and imrpove the Steal to Turnover ratio.

As a team you are basically getting beat in every statistic except assists and deadball rebounds. It's a good start.

Weekend Recap

Hello KofC,

It's been a real long time since I actually posted a regular post. I would say arguably my last "real" post was December 5th. Those were the good old days. Christmas was still coming up and it wasn't -30 degrees.

Pablito and SB should be at the airport right now waiting for their flight. And I am at work, like a sucker. Feeling pretty sick.

As many of you know Pablito and SB came for the weekend on Saturday afternoon. I picked them up at the airport after a short delay and we went and got pizza at Pete's Pizza.

With both SB and myself feeling pretty sick, we sucked it up and joined some people on a Bar Golf tour. For those of you not familiar with Bar Golf, there are 9 bars on a pub/bar tour. Each one represents a hole and each one has a par. A par 4 is one drink/beer, par 5 is two drinks/beers. You can get birdies, eagles and hole-in-ones by drinking more drinks, shots, drop shots/bombs or combinations of all of them. We joined the group on the third hole, but quickly made up ground and arguably we could have made a case for the win or at least a sudden death playoff.

Amongst a lot of people dressed in golf apparel, we had a good time. One lady came over to us and asked what three good looking dudes were doing talking to each other and not her and her two friends. We politely played along as we might mosey our way over there, but then quickly walked the other way as she went back to report the news to her lonely friends. While the third female was obstructed from view, the two we could see (including the ballsy one who talked to us), were not quite up to our impossibly high standards. The ballsy one I referred too might have actually had balls. Her Adams apple was quite pronounced.

We found a couple new friends and convinced them to play credit card roulette for the next round of hole-in-one inducing irish car bombs. Luckily, each new member of our group got stuck with the bill. No funny business was used, third parties held the cards and the new members got to choose. Sometimes the drinking gods smile down on you.

We ended our night hailing a cab back to my place while a drunk homophob tried to fight us. Good times. We played castle crashers and braid for a while. Which btw, I recommend braid to all KofC members.

The next day we went to a breakfast place called Flat Top. Ate some food, and then played soccer. It was the playoffs and the two ringers I brought in couldn't do shit. Partially due to hangovers? Maybe. But either way my dreams of my soccer team finally winning a game was shattered.

Hungover and sick, we watched football and shawshank redemption for the rest of the night.

Yesterday we went to Notorious. Pablito and I liked it. SB thought it was boring. We then went to ESPN zone for dinner, and then quickly dropped about 60 bucks at the arcade. All throwing out our arms and schooling young children in hockey. After that we went to Lucky Strike, where we played pool and bowled.

Pablito won a very close bowling competition that netted him an extra 40 dollars on the night.

We came back and harassed people on PlayStation Home for a while. The non-workers (SB and Pablito) polished off the night with a boot each.

Some take aways from the weekend:
- Drinking slows down a recovery from sickness.
- Pablito is unstoppable at credit card roulette. (0 losses/6 games)
- SB is pretty good at credit card roulette. (1 loss/6 games)
- I am down right terrible at cc roulette (3 losses/6 games)
- PlayStation Home is fun for only one thing. Cock blocking 43 yr old UPS mechanic pedophiles.
- Obama is now the president of the United States. No matter how you feel about that, you have to admit the car trailing his new limo is down right awesome.

I'll be in MN, not this weekend, but next weekend. Anyone have any plans on Friday the 30th?

Sunday Afternoon Time-wasting

Man it's been a while, I almost forgot about how much fun it can be to post. In any case, I'm wondering how everyone's Christmas/New Years was. Mine was pretty dang good, hectic but good. I went to DanaWillEatU's Mom's in Sauk Centre for Christmas, back to Owatonna to work on that Friday, to my parent's place in Iowa for the weekend, back up to DanaWillEatU's mom's on Sunday, back to Owatonna on Monday, work for two days, up to DanaWillEatU's sister's house in Hutchinson Wednesday night for New Years, back to Owatonna Friday morning. Needless to say I'm tired of riding/driving.

I don't have an engagement to announce following the holidays, but it's been crossing the mind quite frequently now. One perk of that day coming is that I won't have all of DanaWillEatU's family checking her ring finger every time we come visit.

My New Years report is far less glamourous than last year (at least I didn't get kicked out of a club), although it was quite fun. I mixed Crown and Coke all night with DanaWillEatU's brother-in-laws and watched Superbad and Eagle Eye. We all probably know how entertaining Superbad is, but I'm curious as to whether any of you know how entertaining Eagle Eye is. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being not entertaining and 10 being Iowa beating up on South Carolina in the Outback Bowl, this rated a 3.2 for me. I think I've gotten more enjoyment out of a Patrick Dempsey chick flick than I did out of Eagle Eye.

Holy cow, the TV just told me that the Baltimore Ravens' Ed Reed has 5 career interceptions in 3 post-season games, that's pretty damn good. Too bad the game isn't all that entertaining and I've been watching Smokey and the Bandit for much of it instead. I never would have guessed that transporting Coors east of Texas back in 1977 would be considered bootlegging. Here are some other online tidbits I've come across as of late:

- Nothing worse than an out of control beaver

- A mildly intense video

- As if we didn't already know

- A buddy at bowling showed this service from Google to me a couple weeks ago, I've already used it when I was lost trying to find DanaWillEatU and I's hotel

I'm going to make another attempt at coming up to the cities for a weekend, potentially the 24th. Go Vikings!

Great article.

Anyone who follows football at all should read this Bill Simmons article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/081219

A few excerpts:

Gift No. 2: A Blu-Ray player ($200-250). Better than DVD in every conceivable way. I won't recommend a brand because I don't want to offend a potential sponsor. (By the way, I didn't write that last sentence.) Make sure you also buy an HDMI cable as part of the gift; women always forget that part. Would we buy you a vacuum without a great extension cord? Of course not.

I thought reader Ian in Portage, Mich., summed up the season nicely: "Hey, check out what I did for the last six hours trying to make this work all the way through. OK, Kansas City beat Oakland, which beat Denver, which beat Cleveland, which beat Cincinnati, which beat Jacksonville, which beat Green Bay, which beat Seattle, which beat San Francisco, which beat Buffalo, which beat San Diego, which beat New England, which beat the N.Y. Jets, who beat Arizona, which beat Miami, which beat St. Louis, which beat Dallas, which beat Washington, which beat New Orleans, which beat Tampa Bay, which beat Minnesota, which beat Carolina, which beat Atlanta, which beat Chicago, which beat Indianapolis, which beat Baltimore, which beat Philadelphia, which beat the N.Y. Giants, who beat Pittsburgh, which beat Houston, which beat Tennessee, which beat Detroit, which beat NOBODY."

and:

"Surely, you grew up with Bob Barker and 'The Price is Right.' Hell, who didn't? Well, I hope you saw this call by Drew Carey from the Showcase Showdown. It makes Buck's call of the Helmet Catch sound like Gus Johnson. This is the new high point of announcing low points. As anyone who has watched this show knows, you rarely see anyone sniff $500, let alone $100 of their showcase showdown total. So what do you have here? The first contestant comes within $500 of the Showcase Showdown, then her opponent beats her by hitting the number right on the head!!!! He got it exactly!!!! This could have been -- in the arms of a decent game-show host -- the greatest game show moment of all-time. For God's sake, Drew couldn't have even faked some excitement as he paused and read off the guy's final dollar total? Would that have killed him? Instead, he looked like he just found out that tapioca had been taken off the menu in the CBS cafeteria. There has never been a worse announcer EVER! Seriously, Bob Barker needs to re-enter this show one day, WWE-style, and take Carey out. Oh My God!!!! It's the Undertaker!!!!!!!!"

Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuttin' ta F*&! Wit!

As promised, I'm taking some time now to write a quick blog about the Wu-Tang Clan concert SB and I attended on Monday. That's right, the Wu-Tang Clan. I'd seen the concert advertised for a while and thought it would be interesting to go because I used to listen to them back in the day as a rebellious teenager and I still pop in a Ghostface CD every once in a while in my car. So on Sunday I asked SB if he was interested and much to my surprise he said "yea, bring da muthaf%$#in' ruckus!"

I bought the tix and then we realized we were little scared. Neither of us had been to a rap show, would there be thugs and gangsters poppin caps in the dorky white guys there? We overcame our fears (and the rotten weather) and it turns out most of Wu-Tang's fans are nerdy white guys just like us. We learned another valuable lesson too, rap shows have complete disregard for the scheduled start time. It was supposed to start at 8:00 but I suggested we show up late so we wouldn't see the opener. We got there at 8:45 and waited over an hour before the screen hiding the stage came up. And then the opener came out! They were a Wu-Tang affiliate called Ice Water. They did a few songs then the screen came back down for about another hour before we finally saw Wu. The concert finally finished up at about 1 AM, resulting in me calling in sick the next day for work.

You can see it was actually quite similar to the last concert SB and I went to, Weezer. Each band has similar gang signs and a fanbase of dorky, urban white dudes...

Here's a quick vid I took with my phone.

Laser that burns things

All you need is an old Xbox HDDVD drive and some other stuff that I don't really understand.

But you can light matches with the laser. I am sure I have a need for that.

Daymonster's Christmas List

Here is a list of some of the stuff I hope Santa Claus brings me.

1. Nerf N-Strike Vulcan EBF-25
It's a fully auto nerf gun that has a rate of fire of about 2-3 darts per second. It has a tripod for holding down the base or a strap to carry it around Josey style.

2. Wild Planet’s Spy Video ATV-360
That little eye piece fits over your eye and the ear phone goes in your (you guessed it) ear. You drive this bad boy in the girls locker room and well, you get the idea... too bad you can't record on this thing.

3. McDonald's Gift Cards

Even though they got rid of the Double Cheeseburger and now call it the McDouble because it only has one slice of cheese, I don't care I can eat it without ever leaving my building at work.

What kind of crap to you guys want?

Help Wanted.

My parents just got a new TV (Sharp 32" LCD HDTV) and they're having trouble syncing the audio and video (audio comes in before video). Would digital audio coaxial cables help this situation (it seems not, because the audio is not the problem) or do I need some sort of new video component cable? Right now the TV is hooked up to a cable box and I have a coax cable loading the video from the box to the TV and basic red/white audio cords loading the audio from the box to the TV. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem?

I looked it up online and stumbled across this pessimistic response. It's pretty interesting--should check it out.

UnkyTrip!

I'm very pleased we're going back to the blog. I liked the layout of the forum, but when it is only us talking this is just so much more user friendly.

Other than being extremely hungover and having to start and write a 15 page paper on 19th century banking that is due tomorrow, things are looking good for Warthog.

Last night I found out that I made it into the top band (insert "boner" joke here) and now I'll be able to go to Japan and China for 3 weeks after graduation this spring. You can see that I'm obviously looking forward to the GreatWallterSlide.
